Science is my absolute favorite subject to teach. The kiddos ask daily if we are going to do any science. I honestly wish I could scream out YES! every.single.day, but the reality is sometimes
I don’t plan ahead and have the labs ready I run out of time teaching all those core subjects. But you CAN teach it every day! I can too! This past year I made an effort to have some science time that was not integrated, real science lab time, in our day at least twice a week. I know some people love to integrate and teach science through reading or whatever, but the labs and experiments are what really reel my kids in.
My school is fortunate enough to have a kit for 3 of our 4 units in 2nd grade. The kits are great, but lack the “stuff” I need, you know, like grades! So I have taken the concepts for my NC essential standards for science and made a few units that I can use with what my kit supplies.
This is quite the ever evolving unit! As I learn more, I add more to it. It’s had two huge revisions! And another coming up this year. I’m happy to admit I have learned so much actually teaching matter…it’s a very different experience than what I had with science as a child and what I do now in my own classroom. I learned science from a workbook. That’s why I am still learning so much!
Another reason is our state standards have changed, and are changing again. I know you feel my pain here! So this unit includes what I used to teach about Matter (3 forms and changes) to what I currently teach about Matter (solid to liquid and liquid to solid, temperature effect)
One question I get a lot is if this unit meets Common Core. Well, there is no common core for science or social studies! If you see that advertised, they most likely mean Reading and Math standards, because that’s all there is! If that’s what you are looking for, check out Stephanie’s Matter for the Common Core Classroom! If you need some fun experiments, then I got what you need!
So if this is something you must teach, snag it today for HALF PRICE! Then it will be $7 the rest of the week through next Tuesday!
